The opera singer said that he plans to run for the Missouri House of Representatives as a Republican in the 2012 election.
Boyd, who has already formed an exploratory committee, told The Southeast Missourian that his interest in politics comes as no surprise to his friends and family.
"It's always been my intention to be a candidate. The biggest joke in my family was that I've been running for governor since I was 5 years old. Well, it used to be a joke," Boyd quipped.
Boyd will be challenged by Holly Rehder in the August 2012 Republican primary. A Democratic challenger hasn't been determined yet.
The Missouri state seat is being vacated by Republican Ellen Brandom, who cannot run again due to term limits.
Boyd triumphed on America's Got Talent in 2008 and went on to headline his own Las Vegas stage show.
He released his first album My American Dream in 2009.
