The Hills star was taken into custody last week for driving under the influence.
"I am very, very ashamed of everything," Wahler told Us Weekly. "I am very sorry for everything that's happened."
Wahler explained that he had been going to AA sessions but lost contact with his sponsor and "got distracted" when he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his movie career.
He refused to talk about the recent arrest, but said: "I think everything happens for a reason. God did that to me, so maybe I would be at [rock] bottom and want to climb my way to the top."
However, Wahler went on to say that he has already returned to AA, adding: "It's all about getting back on track. My girlfriend, my parents, my brothers, my sisters and a handful of my best friends are willing to do everything to keep me out of trouble. I never want to drink again."
Wahler also claimed that he will avoid going to Los Angeles unless he has to for work reasons.
"If I do go, I will go with my father or somebody who is a sober support," he said. "But I definitely won't be going out."
He added: "If I don't stay sober, I am not going to have a life."
