Kristin Cavallari, Jay Cutler return wedding gifts

The Hills star Kristin Cavallari and her ex-fiancé Jay Cutler have returned their wedding gifts.

The gesture serves as the first confirmation from the former couple, who began dating last September, that their three-month engagement has been called off.

Cavallari and the NFL quarterback registered for an array of luxury bakeware and kitchen items before the split, and have now handed the gifts back to their would-be wedding guests along with notes expressing thanks for their generosity.

"You are probably aware that our engagement was recently broken off," one letter obtained by Deadspin reads. "Because of this, we have returned your gift and you should receive a refund on your credit card. The kindness of your gift is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for thinking of us!"

Cavallari was described as being "absolutely devastated" by her break-up with Cutler, although the reality star is since said to have found the Chicago Bears player "beyond controlling".

Cavallari declared in May that it was love at first sight between her and Cutler.
