Lambert, 27, who finished runner-up in the singing contest earlier this year, said that he did not want to discuss the issue while the show was on air because it may overshadow his musical talents.
"I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay," he said. "I've been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man.
"I embrace it... It's just another part of me. [But] I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader."
The popstar also revealed that he had a crush on Idol winner Kris Allen when they first moved into the mansion as roommates.
"I was like, 'Oh, s**t, they put me with the cute guy'. Distracting! He's the one guy that I found attractive in the whole group on the show," he said. "Nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type - except that he has a wife.
"I mean, he's open-minded and liberal, but he's definitely 100% straight."
The reality TV star, who signed a deal with RCA Recordings and 19 Entertainment yesterday, insisted that he has enjoyed all the female attention he has received over recent weeks. "As far as I'm concerned, it's all hot," he said.
