The season eight American Idol runner-up previously said that he felt "liberated" by his decision to publicly come out as gay in Rolling Stone. He is said to have ended his relationship with the 24-year-old interior designer to "focus" on his forthcoming album For Your Entertainment.
The pair, who were first spotted together prior to Lambert's declaration about his sexuality, are "still friends, and [the break-up was] totally mutual", a source told Us Weekly.
"They will still talk and see each other," the insider added. "Adam is crazy busy right now getting the album done and squeezing in rehearsals.
"They both felt this moment is too important for Adam to focus on anything else but getting this album out and having it be a huge hit."
The title track from Lambert's upcoming LP was recently streamed for free on his official website. For Your Entertainment is due out on November 23.
