Didi Benami, Chikezie, David Hernandez, Kimberley Locke and Brandon Rogers were among the singers who helped out at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank last week.
Speaking to ET Online, Locke said: "It is important for us to be here because hunger is a real issue in America.
"A show like American Idol can help bring so much attention to the issue. I think people tend to forget about it, especially in these times where everybody is feeling the pressure of the economy and there are even more kids out there who don't have food."
Other contestants who volunteered in LA included Amy Adams, Kevin Covais, Mikalah Gordon, LaToya London and Elliott Yamin, while a string of other Idol singers pitched in at facilities across the States.
American Idol airs tonight at 8/7c on Fox, followed by Idol Gives Back tomorrow night, which will feature performers including Sir Elton John, Alicia Keys, The Black Eyed Peas and Carrie Underwood.
