The 20-year-old - who has a young son with Sarah Palin's daughter - was asked during an appearance on The View yesterday if he had been watching his former partner on the ABC competition.
"I've seen her one time and I'm giving her the best," he replied.
Co-host Sherri Shepherd then suggested that he wished it was him on the dancefloor, to which he responded: "I can't dance so I don't wish it was me... She's doing a great job. I wish her the best of luck; she is the mother of my son."
Johnston - who was on the show to discuss his mayoral bid in Wasilla - was also quizzed on how often he spent time with son Tripp and whether he looked after him when Bristol was busy.
"When Bristol is away she usually has her mum and stuff in California," he said. "With both of us travelling and whatnot I see him when I can. He's in California right now with Bristol; I'm back and forth in California so I might stop by and see him... When I'm in Alaska and she's there, yeah, I have him."
Johnston and Bristol became parents in December 2008 but split shortly after their son's birth. They reconciled their romance earlier this year but separated for a second time in August.
The View airs weekdays on ABC.
