When asked to comment by Access Hollywood on Osama Bin Laden's death, Chmerkovskiy explained that the news affects him personally because he felt the impact of the terror attacks first-hand.
"Unfortunately… I was at the World Trade Centre when the planes hit," the professional dancer revealed.
He went on to add: "We lived in New Jersey [at the time] and I'd started a dance programme at Brooklyn college. This was the first time ever in my life that I took a path train… I took a path train underneath [the World Trade Centre]. I walked out to look around as the first plane hit.
"I [didn't] know what it was, but I was trying to get back to my family so I hopped inside the train in the WTC metro station. By the time I got out, [smoke] was all over the place and it was a bit crazy. It was a bad event."
Chmerkovskiy, who is partnered with Kirstie Alley on the reality show, went on to assert that while he doesn't glorify death, he does believe that the killing of Bin Laden will help families of the 9/11 victims gain some form of closure.
He remarked: "I don't think the death [of Bin Laden] brings people back, obviously. I do believe, in spite of what others are saying… this needed to happen. I just admire whoever was involved. Thank you to the troops. It's not going to end anything, but it definitely puts a big dent in terrorism."
Nearly 3,000 people were killed during 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington DC and Shanksville, PA.
