The Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver and a female driver were stopped by authorities early Thursday morning for a traffic violation, when officers ran the woman's Honda Civic license plates and found a police report identifying the vehicle as stolen.
Sources tell TMZ that the authorities then ordered both Ward and his associate out of the car and handcuffed both of them.
It is thought that the unknown woman explained to police that she, in fact, owned the vehicle and had filed the police report herself after an altercation with a valet parking worker. When the car was eventually returned, she never informed the police that they could nullify their alert.
Following verification of the facts, Ward and his companion were allowed to leave without incident.
Ward's rep Andrew Ree later confirmed to People that the matter was simply a misunderstanding, saying: "It was an obvious mistake. The police were doing their job… [Ward] was extremely co-operative."
On Monday's edition of Dancing with the Stars, Ward and his professional partner Kym Johnson's twist on the tango received praise from the judges.
Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays and Tuesdays on ABC.
