Dancing with the Stars winner Hines Ward has spoken of his relief that dance partner Kym Johnson was able to recover from her high-profile accident in time for their victory.

Johnson was rushed to hospital earlier this month after seriously injuring her neck during rehearsals, but was later cleared to compete in last night's live finals.

Ward said that the outcome could have easily been much worse, and claimed that his emotional response during the final was because he was so happy that she was alright.

"That fall just made me sick to my stomach," Ward explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "Just to see Kym come back three days after that was just amazing.

"I was just blessed that it didn't go the other way because it really could have. For us to be dancing again, I just got caught up, it was just tears of joy that she was doing something she loved."

Johnson herself, who revealed that she is feeling much better now, credited Ward for helping her get through the scare of her injury.

"Straight after, it was pretty scary but Hines got me through," Johnson said on Good Morning America. "There was a moment that I didn't know if I would be able to continue with the competition."

Ward managed to beat third placed Chelsea Kane and eventual runner-up Kirstie Alley on last night's final to become this season's Dancing with the Stars champion.

Dancing with the Stars will return on ABC for a brand new season on September 19.
