'Emmerdale' star hopes for Soap Awards win

Matthew Wolfenden believes Emmerdale could sweep the board at today's British Soap Awards.

The actor, who plays David Metcalfe in the ITV1 show, said the cast are confident that they can win the award for best soap.

He told the Press Association: "I think, this year particularly, Emmerdale has had some cracking storylines and we've got some great actors and actresses up for best actor and actress.

"I think it could be this year that Emmerdale wipes the board. We're all keeping our fingers crossed and let's hope it is."

Co-star Nicola Wheeler, who plays David's villainous lover Nicola De Souza, agreed that the Yorkshire-based show has a good shot at the top prize.

She said: "I think we stand as good a chance as any soap really. Fingers crossed but I think that most soaps accept that obviously EastEnders and Coronation Street are going to get more awards simply because their audience is bigger and so you've got more of a chance because of the fact that their viewers will vote."

The ceremony, hosted by This Morning presenters Fern Britton and Phillip Schofield, airs next Wednesday at 8pm on ITV1.
