Casualty: Beginnings and Ends

Just how did each series open and what happened in the dramatic concluding episodes? DS presents a roundup of them all.
Series 1
'Gas' (6/9/86): Kuba saves the day after discovering the toxic substance that his injured workers at the Holby docks.
E15 'Closure' (27/12/86): The team are facing closure, so hold a demonstration outside the hospital.
Series 2
'A Little Lobbying' (12/9/87): The staff lobby to get the Holby nightshift re-open and succeed. Baz has left Charlie and new SHO Mary Tomlinson joins team.
E15 'These Things Happen' (19/12/87): Megan is cleared of negligence. Nurse Francine O' Dwyer is injured after a hit and run and Ewart recovers after his heart attack.
Series 3
'Welcome to Casualty (9/9/88): Duffy learns Peter has died. A friend of Ewart's is brought in after being attacked. New SHO David Rowe finds it difficult coping with a young female mechanic who faces paralysis. Ewart comes to blows with new administrator Valerie.
E10 Caring (4/11/88): Charlie asks Valerie to dinner, Megan's marriage problems grow, Kuba is worried about job security while Cyril and Alison plan their house warming party.
Series 4
Chain Reaction (8/9/89): A motorway accident leads to major alert for the Holby team. A lorry carrying toxic drums leaks, leaving a policeman dead after being burnt by the acid.
E12 Hanging On (1/12/89): It Alex's last day but it's overshadowed when a bomb explosion in the city centre puts the team on red alert.
Series 5
Penalty (7/9/90): A riot at a football ground causes disruption for the team. Megan arrives to help, even though she has just buried her estranged husband.
E13 A Reasonable Man (7/12/90): A schizophrenic man holds Megan hostage in CRASH before shooting Charlie in the chest.
Series 6
Humpty Dumpty (6/9/91): Julian and Duffy are winched to an accident by helicopter after an outward bound trip goes wrong for some youngsters. Beth respects a dying cancer's sufferer's last wishes, however faces negligence when her daughter threatens to sue.
E15 Cascade (27/2/92): Holby is on red alert after a plane crash. All staff are on deck after attending Beth's leaving party.
Series 7
Rates of Exchange (12/9/92): A family have differing opinions on organ donation. Ash befriends a teenage runaway who has attempted suicide and Rob gets in Julian's bad books for flirting with a patient.
E24 Boiling Point (27/2/93): Arsonists set the hospital on fire. SHO Rob Khalefa is seriously injured.
Series 8
Cat in Hell (18/9/93): Joyriders cause a train to derail, leading to a major incident at Holby.
E24 Hidden Agendas (26/2/94): Charlie evacuates the department when a man threatens to shoot himself. Charlie manages to persuade him to give him the gun.
Series 9
Blood's Thicker (17/9/94): Charlie turns down the position of Contracts Manager. Ash and Kate conflict, while Eddie discovers a young mother has sold a kidney for money.
E24 Duty of Care (25/3/95): A man, wearing an explosive device demands to speak to Baz about the death of his mother previously in A&E. He ends up blowing himself up in the department. Charlie is Baz's shoulder to cry on.
Series 10
Family Values (16/9/95): An athletic building stand collapses causing casualties. Charlie is frustrated by his and Baz's affair and nervous SHO Daniel Perryman joins the team.
E24 Night Moves (24/2/96): Ash and Laura get married, while Kate's husband Trevor falls down some steps outside A&E and is left unconscious.
Series 11
Chain Reaction (14/9/96): Baz gives birth to baby Louis. Meanwhile Kate's husband is in a vegetative state after his fall last series.
E24 Perfect Blue (22/2/97): The team battle to save Jude after she is stabbed. Matt rushes back from Crete to be by her side.
Series 12
Give my Love to Esme (6/9/97): Josh and Liz deliver a baby in the back of their ambulance. Baz and Louis are nearly caught in a bomb explosion at the local shopping centre.
E26 Everlasting Love (28/2/98): Charlie and Baz get married but not without a hitch. The team sing 'Everlasting Love' at the reception.
Series 13
Internal Inferno (5/9/98): Mark Grace and fellow medic are involved in a car accident outside the department.
E28 Love Over Gold (13/3/99): George and the paramedics are caught up in a bank robbery. Sam is pushed over the hospital balcony by an angry relative.
Series 14
Calm Before the Storm (18/9/99): Sam is rushed to resus after his fall from the balcony. Eve discovers Gerry has cancer.
E30 Being There (25/3/00): Tina heads to Australia in search of Sean. She collapses from heat exhaustion in the deserted outback. When she is eventually reunited with Sean, they decide to get engaged. Holly recovers after being hit by a car, but Charlie collapses in the hospital toilets.
Series 15
Phoenix (16/9/00): Charlie deals with a woman who leaves her baby with him and then takes an overdose. Patrick lets Spencer sleep in the on-call room.
E36 Breaking the Spell (28/4/01): Patrick rescues Holly, who has been kidnapped by her stalker Tom. Dan chases Tom away - Tom falls to his death from the top of a building. Charlie breaks the news to Duffy that Tom has killed her husband Andrew.
Series 16
Holding the Baby (15/9/01): Charlie is forced to deliver Duffy's baby at her home. Josh jumps a red light leading to his ambulance crashing into a car. The ambulance is left hanging precariously off a railway bridge - all on technician Nikki's first day.
E40 Code Red (29/6/02): Nikki is stabbed during a call out- Jack pleads with her to live in CRASH, and proposes to her. Lara is arrested, following the death of David Collier, whom she attacked in self defence
Series 17
Deja Vu (14/9/02): A day out at the fair for Harry and his children, leads to a helicopter tragedy. Nikki returns to work after her stabbing.
E40 A Special Day (21/6/03): Nikki is kidnapped on her wedding day. Jack finds her on a boat - however a boat explosion leaves Jack dead.
Series 18
End of the Line (13/9/03): A train crash hits Holby; nurse Anna is severely injured in the wreckage. While Comfort and Fin, who were also onboard, help deal with the casualties.
E46 Ring of Truth (28/8/04): After finding out about Simon's infidelities, Lara dumps Simon as he heads to their wedding venue by plane. Distressed, Simon causes Jim to lose control of the plane and crash. Simon dies in the explosion.
Series 19
The Ties That Bind Us (11/9/04): The staff deal with the traumas after two children go missing. In the hunt, Nina falls down a sewer and faces severe injury.
E48 Truth, Lies & Videotape (20/8/05): Suicidal Claire drives off the harbour with Luke and Charlie inside. Claire dies whilst the others manage to escape.
Series 20
Holding On (10/9/05): A block of flats collapses with Asylum Seekers inside. Tess helps with the rescue but becomes trapped.
E48 Dog Day Afternoon (26/8/06): Nina defied her suspension and followed Josh to a shout. Her frustration resulted in a reckless attitude and although she jeopardised her safety, she saved a boy's life; Nathan made the shocking confession to Selena that he'd been HIV positive for a year following a one night stand; and Nina made her dramatic exit, belting out a remarkable rendition of 'I love you baby'. Poor Abs was left broken-hearted.
