Neighbours Weekend: Interviews - Jacinta Stapleton
The last viewers saw of Amy, she hadn't resolved her long-standing on-and-off relationship with Lance Wilkinson, played by Andrew Bibby. Despite her feelings for Lance, Amy started a relationship with, and fell pregnant to, flight attendant Damien Smith, played by John Ridley. Damien asked Amy to marry him and, after hesitating, she said yes. Lance and Amy shared an emotional farewell before Amy eloped with Damien to Fiji in 2000.
How did you feel when you returned to set?
"[I was] freaking out. When I walked into the Green Room it just all came flooding back! Except we never had great comfortable couches like these in my time."
Why did you decide to return?
"The producers rang my agent, and since I was in Melbourne already [filming new series Last Man Standing] I was really happy to come back. I wanted to do it for some closure for the character. I really enjoyed playing the character of Amy, and it would be nice for people who remember her to be able to know how she turned out!"
How do you look back on your time with the show?
"Ultimately the show has just been the best training ground for me. It's an unbelievable university for Australian actors."
Have you kept in touch with your old castmates?
"Jesse's [Spencer, Billy Kennedy] been away and Bibby was doing drama school for three years, but Brooke [Satchwell, Anne Wilkinson] and I catch up whenever I'm in Sydney. We were a good little awesome foursome working together so closely. We were so different but had a great dynamic."
