An EastEnders character is to be killed off this Christmas in a bid to "boost ratings" for the soap over the festive period.
The five youngsters of the Square - Martin Fowler (James Alexandrou), Spencer Moon (Christopher Parker), Sonia Jackson (Natalie Cassidy), Vicki Fowler (Scarlett Johnson) and Gus Smith (Mohammed George) - head up to Scotland for a weekend break in the special episode. Their trip ends in tragedy, however, when one character is killed in a Highland car crash.
EastEnders also featured the death of a character by car last Christmas, when Sonia's boyfriend Jamie Mitchell was run down by Martin.
