'Hollyoaks' beats 'EastEnders' in ratings
Channel 4's teen soap Hollyoaks has managed to pull off the seemingly impossible feat of thrashing EastEnders in the ratings.

The success has not come in the UK, however, where the goings-on in Walford regularly entertain 12 million, leaps and bounds ahead of the 2 million who tune in for Chester's finest.

Instead the victory is in New Zealand, where Hollyoaks has been broadcasting on national station TVNZ since Christmas. The show has proved such a hit with the audience that TV execs have ditched EastEnders altogether in favour of the more youth-oriented import.

"It demonstrates the winning formula of the show," said series producer Jo Hallows. "It's a great combination of glamour, youth and gritty storylines tackled in a realistic way. It's a fun drama which takes an irreverent view of life."

In all, Hollyoaks airs in seventeen countries around the world, including in Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Indonesia and even Israel. Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
