Coronation Street won the early evening soaps battle last night with 10m (42.2%) tuning in for its first episode at 7.30pm.

The second visit to Weatherfield, which saw bankrupt kitchen fitter Joe McIntyre make a surprising deal with Len Windass, pulled in 9.26m (36.3%) at 8.30pm.

BBC One's EastEnders delivered 9.38m (37%) for its 8pm episode, which saw Lucas Johnson's ex-wife Trina made a surprise appearance in Walford. The later BBC Three repeat added 809k (4.8%), making EastEnders the most-watched programme of the day overall.

Yorkshire soap Emmerdale averaged 7.58m (34.3%) in its 7pm slot, virtually the same as its performance last week. The instalment saw Marlon and Eli visiting Debbie in prison in an attempt to discover the location of Jasmine, who's currently on the run.

Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks took 1.72m (8.1%) for its first outing at 6.30pm, while Channel 4+1's screening added a further 109k (0.5%). The Chester-based show's first-look episode took 600k (3%) at 7pm on E4.

Australian soaps Neighbours and Home and Away averaged 1.55m (9.8%) and 1.21m (6.2%) respectively in their 5.30pm and 6pm slots on Five. Home and Away's first look had 647k (3.4%) at 6.30pm on Fiver, while the Neighbours repeat at 7pm logged 292k (1.5%).
