Emmerdale's hour-long trial episode just nudged ahead of EastEnders in the ratings last night.

The ITV1 soap, which focused on Debbie's court case, pulled in 6.69m (29.6%) in the 7pm hour, while Archie's advances towards Janine in EastEnders had 6.63m (28.3%) over 30 minutes from 7.30pm.

However, during the period that the two soaps went to head-to-head, EastEnders took 6.63m (28.3%) to its rival's 6.36m (27.1%)

The Walford soap's BBC Three repeat at 10pm was the most watched multichannel programme of the day, adding 1.09m (6.3%).

Channel 4's Hollyoaks, meanwhile, averaged 1.74m (8.3%) for its 6.30pm instalment, while E4's first look at 7pm was seen by 559k (2.9%).

BBC One's daytime medical serial Doctors drew 1.95m (25.2%) at 1.45pm with its episode entitled 'Old Haunts'.

Sam's return to Erinsborough in Five's 5.30pm outing of Neighbours brought in 1.62m (9.8%) and its 7pm repeat on Fiver added 276k (1.4%).

Leah's drunken antics during last night's Home and Away, meanwhile, were seen by 1.23m (6.3%). Fiver's first look interested 704k (3.8%) at 7pm.
