Coronation Street took the lead in the soaps ratings yesterday, according to overnight figures.

The Weatherfield serial's midweek edition, during which Joe lost his temper with David while looking for his painkillers, was watched by 7.96m (40.5%) at 7.30pm. ITV2's midnight repeat added 143k (2.6%).

Emmerdale took 6.05m (33.3%) at 7pm for its episode, which featured Debbie being granted fully residency of Sarah when Andy suddenly withdrew his application.

Last night's Hollyoaks, which saw Russ and Justin leave the village, attracted 1.54m (8.9%) at 6.30pm.

E4's first look was the most-watched multichannel programme of the day, taking 653k (4%) at 7pm. E4+1's timeshift transmission added 172k (0.9%).

Neighbours' traditional 5.30pm outing on Five had 1.47m (11.8%), before Fiver's repeat at 7pm added a further 238k (1.5%).

BBC One's instalment of Doctors, titled 'Red Letter Days: Part I' managed 1.44m (23.4%) at 1.45pm.

Five's screening of Home and Away at 6pm drew 1.06m (6.7%), while Fiver's first look interested 558k (3.6%).
