EastEnders took a narrow lead in the soap ratings battle on Friday evening, overnight figures show.

The Walford serial's final instalment of the week, during which Whitney's birth mother Debra made a surprise appearance on the Square, brought in 8m (37.7%).

BBC Three's usual 10pm repeat added a further 545k (2.9%).

Coronation Street's double bill, which saw Poppy sack Betty and Ted have a heart attack, averaged 7.93m (39.1%) and 7.34m (32.8%) at 7.30pm and 8.30pm respectively.

ITV2's repeats between midnight at 1am added 261k (4.1%) and 228k (4.7%).

Emmerdale, meanwhile, logged 5.84m (31.4%) for its offering at 7pm.

Five's edition of Neighbours at 5.30pm, during which Zeke's 'Lost Boy' identity was threatened, interested 1.37m (9.9%). Fiver's repeat at 7pm drew its lowest audience in months, averaging 150k (0.9%).

Hollyoaks' screening at 6.30pm on Channel 4, which featured the arrest of Clare Devine, was watched by 1.33m (7.4%). Channel 4+1's timeshift repeat added 107k (0.6%), while E4's first look pulled in 570k (3.4%).

Home and Away's final outing of the week managed 1.01m (6.1%) at 6pm on Five, before Fiver's first look put in 468k (2.9%).
