Coronation Street's double bill led Monday night's soap ratings, early figures show.

The ITV soap's first two episodes of the week, which saw lovelorn Fiz propose to her imprisoned lover John via CCTV and him accept following a heart-to-heart, were watched by 8.12m (41.2%) and 8.98m (41.7%) at 7.30pm and 8.30pm respectively.

ITV2's later repeats in the hour from 12.45am added 113k (3.6%) and 136k (6.1%).

BBC One's EastEnders also turned out strong figures for its first outing of the week, during which Jack proposed to Ronnie, putting in 8.24m (40.1%) at 8pm.

BBC Three's usual 10pm repeat was the most-watched multichannel programme of the day, adding a further 746k (4.2%).

Meanwhile, Emmerdale averaged 5.89m (32.3%) at 7pm.

Channel 4's edition of teen soap Hollyoaks, which featured a surprise kiss between Tony and Cindy, drew 1.59m (9.1%) in its regular 6.30pm slot. E4's first look took 571k (3.4%).

Five's Australian hour saw 1.33m (10.2%) tune in for Neighbours' instalment at 5.30pm, before 1.12m (7%) caught Home and Away at 6pm.

Fiver's 7pm Neighbours repeat added 214k (1.3%), while 562k (3.6%) tuned in for the multichannel's first look Home and Away screening.
