Coronation Street took the lead in the early evening soaps battle yesterday, early figures show.

The ITV soap's first two episodes of the week, which saw Joe ask Graeme to acquire him some pills and David lose it with Jason, averaged 8.8m (43%) and 9.22m (41.6%) at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

ITV2's later repeats between 11.15pm and 12.15am added a further 139k (1.7%) and 150k (2.5%).

EastEnders, meanwhile, drew 8.46m (39.2%) for its episode, during which Shirley finally discovered Heather's secret pregnancy.

BBC Three's 10pm repeat was the most-watched multichannel programme of the day, adding 658k (3.6%).

Emmerdale's instalment took 6.48m (34%) at 7pm.

Doctors' first episode following its summer break, titled 'Crisis? What Crisis?' managed 1.46m (20%) at 1.45pm.

Channel 4's Hollyoaks outing at 6.30pm had 1.54m (8.4%), before E4's first look took 573k (3.3%).

Neighbours' 5.30pm instalment, which featured Lucas and Elle making some shock discoveries, put in 1.32m (9.9%) on Five, while Fiver's repeat at 7pm managed 223k (1.3%).

Five's screening of Home and Away logged 1.12m (6.7%) at 6pm. Fiver's first look averaged 572k (3.5%).
