Coronation Street narrowly edged its BBC rival EastEnders in the soap ratings yesterday evening, overnight figures show.

ITV's third Thursday outing of its Weatherfield soap, during which Joe stole Gail's keys to the medical centre, pulled in 7.34m (34.2%) at 8.30pm. ITV2's repeat from 11.05pm added a further 169k (1.7%).

The shock arrival of Ronnie's first love Joel in EastEnders, meanwhile, was watched by 7.26m (38.3%) at 7.30pm. BBC Three's traditional 10pm repeat took 620k (3.5%).

Emmerdale's double bill, which featured Nicola falling into premature labour on her own and eventually giving birth to a baby girl, drew 5.6m (31.8%) and 6.47m (32.7%) at 7pm and 8pm.

BBC One's daily dose of Doctors, yesterday titled 'Surrender', managed 1.43m (20.5%) at 1.45pm.

Neighbours' outing at 5.30pm on Five, in which Miranda declared her love for Steve, interested 1.38m (11.5%), before Fiver's repeat added 211k (1.3%).

Channel 4's Hollyoaks screening averaged 1.37m (8.2%) in its usual 6.30pm timeslot, while E4's first look attracted 574k (3.6%).
