It was a closely fought race in the soap stakes last night with EastEnders narrowly edging Emmerdale in the clash, while Coronation Street was the most-watched soap of the evening.

Emmerdale's hour-long edition, in which Cain reached the end of his tether with Charity, logged 6.64m (30.8%) between 7pm and 8pm, pipping EastEnders' extended edition by an overall 20k.

Over on BBC One, EastEnders' 60-minute wedding episode, which featured Lucas and Denise's nuptials and Owen's murder, pulled in 6.62m (28.3%) between 7.30pm and 8.30pm - the first time its ratings have dipped below the 7m mark since August 20.

BBC Three's repeat, however, more than made up for the terrestrial figures, with 1.35m (8.1%) tuning in at 10pm. It was the most-watched multichannel programme of the night and drew its highest re-run figures since July 7.

EastEnders: The Two Faces of Lucas took 338k (1.5%) in the hour from 8.30pm on BBC Three.

During the 30-minute clash from 7.30pm, 6.4m (28.5%) tuned in to EastEnders, while 6.24m (27.8%) watched Emmerdale.

Meanwhile, Coronation Street was the most-watched multichannel programme of the day, despite the numbers also falling below 7m. The outing, which saw Sally nearly walk in on Kevin and Sally, averaged 6.84m (27.9%) at the slightly earlier Thursday time of 8pm. Its repeat from 1.10am added 134k (5.7%).

During the half-hour clash period between with Corrie from 8pm, EastEnders averaged the same audience as the ITV soap, logging 6.84m (28.1%).

Hollyoaks' latest offering put in 1.5m (7.4%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4, before E4's first look brought in 511k (2.6%).

BBC One's episode of Doctors, yesterday titled 'Hurt', delivered 1.46m (21.4%) at its usual time of 1.45pm.

Five's Neighbours was seen by 1.43m (8.9%) at 5.30pm, while a further 151k (0.8%) tuned in for its 7pm repeat on Fiver.

Home and Away managed 958k (5%) at 6pm on Five, before 456k (2.4%) switched over to watch Fiver's first look half an hour later.
