Soap Moments 2009: Exits

BBC soap EastEnders caused the most controversy this year when storyliners took the decision to kill off Ronnie Mitchell's (Samantha Womack) estranged daughter Danielle Jones (Lauren Crace).

EastEnders' executive producer Diederick Santer still stands by his decision, though. He recently told DS: "I knew there would be a reaction to Danielle's death - I felt it when we storylined it, when I read the script, when I went on set on the day we filmed it and when I watched the cut. I perhaps didn't perceive that it would upset some people to the extent that it did, but I still believe it was the right outcome."

Their bold exits didn't stop there, however - Trina Johnson (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) subsequently died at the hands of a rake when her husband Lucas (Don Gilet) caused her to fall back on it and pierce her neck, while Owen Turner (Lee Ross) was murdered with a bow tie.

Meanwhile, over in Hollyoaks, bad boy Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) was killed by a huge falling mirror in The Loft, before Bryan Kirkwood masterminded UK soap's first death by parachute in E4 spinoff Hollyoaks Later.
