The actor is switching Lee Hunter for the part of Jamie Hope, Bob's beloved son. Jamie arrives in the village in the New Year to witness his dad's wedding to Viv.
"He's a real chip off the old block but has a slightly strained relationship with his dad," said Carter. "I'm really excited about the character and can't wait to get started on Emmerdale."
Also joining the cast is Kerry Stacey as "feisty" barmaid Tonicha Daggert (pictured). The cousin of Danny, Tonicha has been living in Portugal where she bumps into Paddy on his holidays.
Meanwhile, the veterinary surgery will welcome the arrival of smooth-talking Irish vet Hari Prasad (actor John Nayagam) in December. Hari is an old university friend of Paddy's and has "a business proposition that he hopes Paddy can't refuse".
Kathleen Beedles, series producer, said: "It's an exciting new season for Emmerdale and we are delighted to welcome Alex, Kerry and John to the cast."
