EastEnders recorded a convincing win over Coronation Street on Thursday night, early viewing figures show.

'Enders bounced back after Corrie secured a rare victory a fortnight ago. However, this week the gap was narrowed back to only 200k.

Sam's baby announcement shocked 7.42m (37.3%) at 7.30pm, and a further 959k (4.8%) watched the Albert Square serial on BBC Three at 10pm.

Meanwhile, at 8.30pm, Sophie and Sian's runaway in Coronation Street attracted 7.25m (30.9%) to ITV1. Prior to that, a double bill of Emmerdale fetched 6.28m (34.5%) and 6.61m (30.8%) at 7pm and 8pm.

Waterloo Road dropped a significant portion of its premiere audience, as 3.93m (17.5%) tuned in at 8pm.

Elsewhere, Hollyoaks took 1.13m (6.8%), while 330k (1.8%) watched E4's first look. Neighbours and Doctors averaged 1.04m (8.4%) and 1.4m (23.2%) respectively.
