Corrie star Liz Dawn taken to hospital
Coronation Street star Liz Dawn is being monitored in hospital as she battles chronic emphysema, an incurable lung disease.

The actress, who plays Vera Duckworth, checked into the private Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, Cheshire after Christmas.

"The illness left her feeling like she couldn't get her breath out," a source told The People. "She also felt tired and weak. Her family, friends and fellow cast members are deeply concerned for her.

"They know that the disease can get worse sometimes. Episodes like these are bound to be traumatic. At the moment Liz is sick - but with emphysema there are good days and bad.

"It was felt it was much better for her to be looked after in hospital. But she remains very positive and has the full support of her family and friends."

Liz was first diagnosed with the condition, which leaves the lungs inflamed and can cause heart failure, 22 months ago.

A spokesperson for the soap assured fans, "There is nothing to worry about. She spent a fantastic Christmas with her family. She has not missed any filming schedules."
