US comedian Carol Burnett is to make a guest stint on Desperate Housewives, according to Us Weekly.

The star, famed for playing Miss Hannigan in Annie, will star as Bree's "cold" stepmother Eleanor Mason in an episode airing towards the end of this season.

"Eleanor took over after Bree's mother was killed when Bree was a child," explained Housewives creator Mark Cherry. "She's a very tightly wound, proper lady for whom appearances mean everything. A lot of what Bree has become came from this woman," and their relationship is "polite but strained."

Eleanor arrives with husband Henry after Bree's son Andrew announces his intent to become emancipated.

Meanwhile, Cherry promised that a "big finale" was planned for the Applewhites and that several dead characters would be returning for the two-hour season ender, which will comprise "a mixture of current stories and flashbacks on how all the women came to Wisteria Lane". Next season's mystery will centre on one of the four housewives, who ends up "in a serious relationship with a man who has some pretty dark secrets".

Burnett's episode will air April 9 in the US and May 10 in the UK.
