The 46-year-old, who has had a rollercoaster past two weeks of bad publicity, said he was delighted with the honour and insisted rumours of an affair with co-star Debra Stephenson (Frankie Baldwin) had not got him down. "Everything's fine, it really is," he commented. "You just have to get on with the job."
Meanwhile, EastEnders won the best soap award for the 10th year running along with five other awards. Lacey Turner (Stacey Slater) took best actress, Charlie Clements (Bradley Branning) was best newcomer and the pair were best couple.
Sexiest female went to Kara Tointon (Dawn Swann) and the Mitchells were named the best family in soap.
Coronation Street also managed six awards including Walsh's, however. Richard Fleeshman was sexiest male, Bill Ward (Charlie Stubbs) best bad boy and Antony Cotton (Sean Tully) won the funniest character title.
Samia Smith (Maria Sutherland) walked away with best dressed and Helen Worth was given an outstanding achievement for 32 years as Gail Platt, Hillman, Tilsley and Potter.
Emmerdale took two titles: best bitch, for Patsy Kensit (Sadie King) and best storyline for Alice Dingle's cancer battle.
