EastEnders has been left off the shortlist for the Royal Television Society Programme Awards - one of television's most prestigious events.
The blow follows sustained criticism of the show saying it is suffering from boring storylines and plain acting.
A source defended the soap and said it was satisfied with plaudits already won. “We’re fine," he told The Sun. "We won the National TV Award.”
Among those who are nominated for RTS awards are Dame Helen Mirren, for best actress in Prime Suspect, and Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May for best presenter.
