Johnson's departure will come as part of a storyline involving the death of his daughter Gemma, which will unfold in the coming week.

"I've had a wonderful time playing Dom Andrews but, like with most things, you have to know when it's time to leave the building, hopefully on a high note," Johnson told the Daily Star Sunday.

He continued: "I'm fortunate to be leaving the show off the back of a gripping storyline which I hope the audience will appreciate and have empathy for."

The actor will officially leave the series in the spring.

Johnson made his first appearance in Emmerdale in December 2012.
