The Health Protection Agency has urged soap producers to educate viewers about safe sex.

The organisation's comments follow news that cases of sexually transmitted diseases, including herpes and chlamydia, are increasing - especially amongst youngsters. There was a 16 per cent rise in the number of young women aged 16 to 19 being treated for herpes in 2006.

HPA chief Professor Pat Troop has claimed that soap writers should be more responsible when planning sex scenes. She said: "You don't see [characters] pulling out their condoms."
