ITV1 shakes up soap schedules

ITV1 soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street have been moved in the schedules as part of the network's radical 2008 revamp.

Both soaps' Sunday episodes have been moved to weekdays in the new schedule, with Corrie effectively reduced to three outings a week.

Despite the reduction in the number of nights each soap is broadcast, the total number of minutes per week remains the same. Emmerdale will transmit Monday to Friday at 7pm, with its Tuesday episode turning into a one-hour special airing between 7pm and 8pm.

Coronation Street, meanwhile, will air twice on Mondays and Fridays (7.30pm and 8.30pm) with a single episode on Wednesdays at 7.30pm.

An ITV source told DS that the new scheduling will remain for the "foreseeable future" - even beyond the 10-week run of Dancing on Ice which will now air on Sundays.

Of the new schedule, ITV director of television Simon Shaps said: "We've responded to viewer feedback on Coronation Street and Emmerdale so that fans can catch up with their favourite soaps over fewer nights."

An Emmerdale spokeswoman told DS: "The hour episodes will all be storyline driven. We've played specials in the Tuesday night slot before and there is always a real viewer appetite for it."

ITV's decision to broadcast an hour-long Emmerdale on Tuesday nights will result in a weekly clash with BBC soap EastEnders which begins at 7.30pm.
