Tarmey has pacemaker fitted after heart op

Coronation Street actor Bill Tramey has had to have a pacemaker fitted after his heart stopped following bypass surgery.

The 61-year-old, who plays Jack Duckworth in the ITV soap, was making good progress after the eight-hour operation to tackle long-running cardiac problems. Whilst recovering two days later, however, he suffered cardiac arrest and had to be brought back to life with electric shocks.

"I'd been to see him with our daughter, Sara, and we'd just got to the car park to head home when my mobile phone rang to tell me there had been an emergency," his wife Alma told the Manchester Evening News. "It seems Bill had started eating his meal when he suffered a cardiac arrest. The medical team used defibrillators to bring him back to life."

Tarmey has been temporarily written out of the soap whilst he recovers.
