Former Brookie star to be new sweetheart
Published Tuesday, Jul 9 2002, 21:52 BST | By James Welsh
Former Brookside star Claire Sweeney is to be the new forces' sweetheart, following in the footsteps of Dame Vera Lynn and Geri Halliwell.
Sweeney first found fame on the soap, before going on to star in hit West End show Chicago. She said: "These troops are doing the most fantastic job in sometimes difficult places. They are a long way from home and loved ones and I hope that I can go a tiny bit to help keep them as cheerful and buoyant as British soldiers, airmen and sailors always are."
