Brown takes a break from "EastEnders"

June Brown, aka the much-loved Dot Cotton from EastEnders, is taking time out from the BBC soap to star in a drama for ITV.

The 75-year-old will shortly leave the Square behind her to film Marjorie And Gladys for ITV1, not returning until January next year.

Brown will play Gladys in the show, being made by Carlton, a cleaner who goes on the run with her boss Marjorie after Marjorie accidentally kills an intruder in her home.

"Marjorie And Gladys is a bit like a British Thelma And Louise, with a very funny script," a Carlton spokesman told the Media Guardian. "It features a quite posh lady, who we hope will be played by Penelope Keith, who accidentally kills an intruder in her house. She panics, goes on the run with her cleaner and they bump into various criminal types along the way."

Brown joined EastEnders in 1985. She quit in 1993 but returned to the Square five years later.
