Comic Shane Ritchie has joined EastEnders as the new manager of the Queen Vic, reports the News Of The World today.

"Shane Richie is about to become a major, major player in the show," an insider told the newspaper. "And being in charge at the Queen Vic gives him every opportunity to pull the birds as well as the pints."

The 38-year-old, who will play Alfie in the soap, has already filmed his first scenes, which will go out in November. "It's been easier than I thought because I know loads of the cast already," he said. "I fluffed my first lines though. I kept looking round seeing pictures of Den and Angie — all the ghosts of the last 17 years!"

The days for landlady Peggy Mitchell -- played by Barbara Windsor -- are not numbered, however. The insider added that she would "continue to play a major role as the power behind the Mitchell clan."
