Axed EastEnder Todd Carty has signed a £200,000 contract to join ITV's police drama series The Bill, according to The Mirror today.

Carty -- who played fruit and veg seller Mark Fowler in the soap -- will now take on the role of PC Gabriel, a constable with "a dark side."

The 39-year-old said last night: "I'm really chuffed to be joining The Bill. I've always been a big fan of the show and getting my teeth into a new character is very exciting."

Paul Marquess, show producer, said he was delighted to have signed Carty. "As a former Grange Hill addict I'm delighted to have signed TV legend Todd Carty. His new character will be light years away from Mark and there will be plenty of surprises in store for Todd's many fans. At first PC Gabriel will seem very happy-go-lucky - but he has a dark side."

After taking a break in France with his family, Carty will begin filming in the New Year, appearing on screen a couple of months later. He'll be working with some familiar faces, however -- former EastEnders colleagues Roberta Taylor (Terry's wife Irene) and Russell Floyd (market inspector Michael Rose) now have key roles in the series.
