Last night's episode of EastEnders was seen by over 12 million viewers, according to early ratings figures out today.
The storyline, which saw Jamie Mitchell run over by learner driver Martin Fowler, is expected to draw even more viewers over the Christmas week as Jamie fights for his life in hospital.
On average, 11.7m watched between 19.30 and 20.00, equating to more than half of the TV-watching audience at the time. At the same time, regional programming on ITV1 drew just 3.8m.
Whilst the viewing figures for the soap are good, they still haven't managed to top this year's highest rated episode in January, when 14.8m tuned in to see Little Mo batter her abusive husband Trevor with an iron.
