Year in Brief 2008: 'Emmerdale'

By
It's been far from quite in the Yorkshire Dales this year, so here, DS looks back at the best of the last 12 months in the peaceful rural village of Emmerdale.

January

The year kicked off to a fiery start when Matthew King discovered that Rosemary was to be buried alongside his father, Tom. Furious, Matt began to fill in the grave during Rosemary's funeral, resulting in a graveside brawl between Matt and Rosemary's son Grayson. Meanwhile, as Andy and Jo prepared for their big day, Andy was shocked when his solicitor turned up to inform him that he'd been summonsed to court. He was ultimately sentenced to three years in prison. Despite Val's eyesight concerns, she maintained she was fit to drive, but was left shaken when she accidentally knocked over an innocent Samson Dingle in the middle of the road by reversing into him. And finally, following Sam's confession to Donna that Eli was Hotton's drug lord, Eli was swiftly arrested. Edna's cover-up of her sister Lily's involvement, however, resulted in Edna evicting a disgraced Lily from the house.

February

After agreeing to be Grayson and Pedy's surrogate, it was evident that Katie's feelings for Gray were growing by the day. During a heated moment, Katie gave in and kissed Gray, which prompted the shock confession from Gray that Perdy was blackmailing him. In prison, meanwhile, Andy's tough time was eased by his jailhouse marriage to Jo. During the third week of the month, a mother and father's worst nightmare struck the lives of Ashley and Laurel as baby Daniel tragically died in his cot, sending shockwaves throughout the village. And finally, despite David's concerns about murdering Donald, Nicola decided to press ahead with their plan to drug Donald. David, however, threw a spanner in the works when he pushed the drug-laced cheesecake on the floor.

March

The month of March saw Emmerdale's first ever civil partnership as Jonny and Paul tied the knot in a baroque-themed ceremony. Emily Kirk also made a brief return for the nuptials, too. Ashley and Laurel, meanwhile, continued to struggle with the death of baby Daniel. The day of the burial saw a moving eulogy from Ashley, before Laurel blamed her mother Hilary for Daniel's death at the wake. Meanwhile, following a pregnancy scare, Jamie decided to prove his love for Louise and proposed to her - an offer which she gracefully accepted. And finally, Andy's temper towards Jo reached boiling point after he discovered that Jo was lying about Sarah's whereabouts - instead of being at playgroup, Sarah was with her real mother, Debbie. Andy turned to violence and hit Jo for the first time. Little did she know at the time that his behaviour was soon to spiral out of control.

April

April Fool's Day saw the introduction of Dingle relative Gennie, but her arrival in the village wasn't as smooth as she had hoped. While giving Paddy a lift to work, Ross clipped Gennie's moped and sent her flying into a ditch. Gennie was sent to hospital, while Ross, who was concerned for his job, begged Paddy to tells the police that he was driving. The shock of the month came in the form of still-grieving parents Ashley and Laurel receiving some distressing news from the doctor. Their lives were thrown into turmoil yet again when they were told that Laurel and Daniel's blood groups were incompatible and that Laurel couldn't have been baby Daniel's mother. Meanwhile, at the police station, Donna became embroiled in Ross's attempts to set up Shane. After hearing that Ross had planted drugs in Shane's locker, Donna went to retrieve them but was caught by Shane retrieving the stash. And finally, the end of the month saw T.J. being rushed to hospital with E. coli.

May

Ashley and Laurel dropped a bombshell on Mel and Arthur at the beginning of May when they revealed that their babies may have been swapped at birth - and baby Daniel could have been theirs. Meanwhile, in search of Freddie and the stolen charity money, Viv mistakenly attacked a stranger in the street. Andy's violence towards Jo continued in May, resulting in Jo being hospitalised with a broken wrist after an argument with Andy over the future of the goats. Diane's concern for Jo was heightened, but Andy successfully quelled her worry. And finally, with Katie adamant that Perdy would have no involvement in the baby's life, she's stunned to see Gray giving Perdy a goodbye kiss and believed the pair to be in cahoots.

June

Emmerdale's 35th anniversary was marked on June 3 with the wedding of fan favourites Val and Eric Pollard. Not all went to plan as Val was kidnapped by the Dingles and held to ransom. The pair eventually became husband and wife after an unwitting reconciliation. The verdict at baby Arthur's parental hearing is announced, resulting in Laurel and Ashley being named as Arthur's parents. After becoming increasingly jealous of Jasmine's friendship with Jake, he pressurised her into agreeing to move to France with him. However, on the day of the planned move, Jasmine announced she was staying in the village, resulting in Miles turning back to drink and heading to France alone. And finally, an eager-to-help Sam took Pollard's words too seriously when he and Eli set fabric beside an electric heater, resulting in the factory going up in smoke.

July

Emmerdale's new superbitch Anna de Souza arrived in the village on July 8, much to the shock of her father, whom she hadn't seen in years, and to Carl, who was on the verge of becoming the new head of the de Souza business empire. Katie, meanwhile, was stunned to discover Gray's affair with Paul. Despite being adamant to leave Gray over his deceit, Perdy convinced Katie to stay with him just until the baby was born. Katie reluctantly agreed. After eventually giving birth to a baby boy, Katie handed it to Grayson, while Matthew King, who was still evidently in love with Perdy, gave her £20,000 to start a new life. After having missed Perdy and the baby's departure by a few seconds, Gray demanded to know Pedy's whereabouts from Katie. However, after attacking Katie and disgracing himself with so many in the village, he left Emmerdale a broken man.

August

With the knowledge that Andy was returning early from his break, Jo frantically set about cancelling her lunch with Sam, scared of what Andy would say if he found out. However, when Sam moved in for a kiss, Jo was forced to put Sam in his place. Embarrassed, he made a run for it just as Andy returned home. Andy immediately accused Jo of talking to Sam behind his back and when Andy eventually found Sam, he ferociously attacked him. Carl, meanwhile, found himself torn between Lexi and Anna. But when Lexi revealed that Carrie told her Carl's secret about him killing his father, Tom, Carl chose Lexi in a bid her to keep her on-side. Meanwhile, the day of Viv's trial dawned and with Donna and Ross in hot pursuit of Freddie, Viv pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison. While chasing Freddie, though, Donna and Ross were involved in a car explosion. And finally, Jo eventually plucked up the courage at the end of the month to stand up to Andy, calling him a wife-beating monster.

September

On the day of the village show, Katie returned home from the celebrations in the village and like Matt, walked straight into a hostage situation and found herself being held at gunpoint alongside Matt. The deranged gunman turned out to be none other than Grayson, who was frantically trying to locate his son. When Carl and Jimmy walked in on the scenario, the gun was fired, wounding only Carl. Grayson was eventually led away by the police. Meanwhile, in the middle of the month, Anna confronted her father over his treatment of her over the years and demanded to know why she'll never be good enough to oversee the de Souza empire. She could only look on in horror, however, as Donald clutched his chest in pain as he slid to the floor, suffering a non-fatal heart attack. And finally, while Donna and Ross gave in to temptation and shared a kiss, Jo found herself lying to Andy that she was pregnant in order to avoid a beating.

October

At the police fundraiser ball, Marlon thought he was leaving Donna in safe hands with Ross, but little did he know that the chemistry between the pair was bubbling at an all-time high. Retiring to Ross's room, the pair fell into each other's arms and shared a night of passion, completely unaware that bent copper Shane had already rumbled their intentions. Meanwhile, when Andy forced Jo to take a pregnancy test, Jo had no option but to come clean with Andy that there was never a baby in the first place. Shocked to discover that Jo was planning to run away, he chased her into the barn and became impaled on a farming spike. A scared Jo walked off, wishing him dead. And finally, Jonty, an old flame of Louise turned up in the village. After Louise called off the wedding because of Jamie's lack of trust, Jamie eventually realised he was wrong to mistrust her. In a race against time, Jamie ultimately caught Louise before she left the village and the pair left for Australia together.

November

Following Lily's lies over the raffle ticket and handing the winnings to her son Peter, her sister Edna was furious by her dishonesty. When Lily complained of a headache, Enda presumed that she didn't want to face her colleagues now that her lie had been exposed. At the factory, Val confronted Lily about her scam but during their argument, Lily collapsed. She was later diagnosed with a cerebral aneurysm. Jasmine, meanwhile, put herself in a precarious position in the hunt for the story of a lifetime. Despite Debbie and Eli's warnings, Jasmine allowed Shane to seduce her into bed. And finally, Anna proposed to Matt, but with Donald disapproving, Matt took it upon himself to have a private word. During their confrontation, Donald had another heart attack, while Matthew looked on, withheld his medication and watched him die. And finally, Daz finally saw Andy's true colours and punched him in the face.

December
In the first half of the climactic month to a dramatic year in Emmerdale village, Jasmine searched for evidence in Shane's flat to probe he was a bent cop. Just as she located his drug stash, he returned home. Realising something wasn't right, he located Jasmine in his cupboard and violently and sexually threatened her. When Debbie heard Jasmine's screams, she rushed to the flat where a deadly scenario ensued. Jasmine ultimately killed Shane by whacking him over the head with a chair. A panic-stricken Jasmine was helped by Debbie and Eli to dump the body in Home Farm's lake. In the second half of the month, disaster strikes on Matt and Anna's wedding day, Jo leaves the village and Victoria makes a chilling discovery when she plummets into the murky depths of the lake in the grounds of Home Farm.
