The 36-year-old announced his decision to leave the rural serial after four years in September 2008 in order to pursue other projects.
On screen, his character left the village with husband Jonny Foster (Richard Grieve) after learning that his mother Val (Charlie Hardwick) was lying about his father Rodney's (Patrick Mower) 'fatal heart condition'.
However, after more than a year off screen, Paul returns to Emmerdale alone in time for his sister Nicola's (Nicola Wheeler) will-she-won't-she wedding to fiancé Jimmy (Nick Miles).
A show source told The Sun: "Mathew is really excited about returning to Emmerdale. He loved playing Paul. The character was groundbreaking and a massive hit with viewers."
Contrary to reports, however, there are "no plans" for a full-time return.
The episodes are expected to air in three weeks' time.
