Estensen: 'Fans want Diane, Doug romance'

Elizabeth Estensen has revealed that she often receives letters from Emmerdale fans who want her character Diane Sugden to settle down with Doug Potts.

In recent months, viewers have seen Diane's love life thrown into turmoil after fiancé Charlie Haynes conned her out of her savings, leaving her devastated.

However, in next week's episodes, Diane finally returns to the village following a trip to Spain and starts trying to get her life back on track.

Speaking to Inside Soap about who Diane could fall for next, Estensen admitted: "The letters I get say, 'Doug is the man for you'! On my recent holiday, I was at the airport and this great big bloke came up to me and said, 'I can't believe the way you're treating Doug - he's done everything for you'."

Asked whether Diane would ever give Doug (Duncan Preston) a chance, the actress replied: "He's very decent - what you see is what you get. If she wants reliability and companionship, Doug could offer those things, even if he's not the most exciting man.

"That's often what happens in love. You think you go for a certain type, then you meet someone and stick with them for reasons you can't explain - it just works."
