The actress's character Katie Sugden is among those in danger when an inferno spreads through the village in tomorrow night's double bill of the ITV1 soap.
Speaking to Take 5 about the disaster plot, Winward explained: "I've been quite quiet this year so I was pleased when I heard I had a big storyline. The filming has been really full-on lately. There's been lots of 12-hour days and I often work from 7am in the morning until 7pm at night.
"Then I have to learn lines when I get home, but it's worth it for a big story. I've been working with a lot of my close friends as well, so it's been really good fun."
Winward also insisted that she has not struggled with the task of keeping the secrets of the fire storyline under wraps.
She said: "I'm used to keeping the storylines under my hat. We can't say anything or we get into so much trouble. People always ask, especially friends and family, but I stay tight-lipped. I wouldn't even tell my mum about a big storyline."
Show bosses have confirmed that the fire will claim the lives of at least two characters.
