Ex-Emmerdale star Matt Healy has claimed that it was his idea to kill off alter ego Matthew King.

The 40-year-old actor, who appeared in the Yorkshire-based drama for four years, also revealed that fans mention the heartless womaniser "every day".

"Someone mentions Matthew at some point every day," he told Inside Soap. "I really don't mind, as it means I must have been doing something right if they still want to talk to me about him. Emmerdale fans are very loyal - they'll still come and see me in whatever I'm doing.

"It was actually my idea [to kill off Matthew]. I wanted to move on, and didn't want to have the constant thought in the back of my mind that I could return. Also, I really thought they'd done everything they could with him."

Since leaving Emmerdale in 2008, Healy has struggled to find work, and admitted two years ago that he was close to quitting acting
