The actress was recently cast in the role of Jai and Nikhil Sharma's outspoken mother Georgia, who makes her debut at the end of next week.
Goodwin, best known for playing The Bill's June Ackland for 23 years, has now revealed that she is on a three-month contract with Emmerdale as she does not want to be tied down to one role.
She told TV Times: "I'm not going to be here for years and years. I'm not doing that again! I would never have signed a contract for more than three months, but apart from anything else, they might not want me after that time!
"I don't like the idea of being in something for the long-term. I'm doing all the things I missed out on while I was in The Bill, like working in theatre, which I love. At the moment, I almost don't want a terribly easy life."
Goodwin also hinted that there could be drama in store as Georgia is introduced to Jai's fiancée Charity Tate (Emma Atkins).
She confirmed: "Sparks fly from the word go. She's going to marry Georgia's favourite son - and Charity is not good news!"
Georgia's first Emmerdale episode airs on Thursday, November 3 at 7pm on ITV1.
