The actress has been playing Rachel Breckle for well over a year, but so far viewers have only met her sister Ali (Kelli Hollis) and the rest of the Spencer clan.
Rachel is currently pregnant with Jai Sharma's baby, which could provide an excuse to explore more of her family in the future.
Discussing Rachel's upcoming stories, Oaten told Inside Soap's Yearbook 2013: "The baby plot is a big one and will go on for a while. But what I'd really like is to find out a lot more about Rachel's family, maybe even meet her parents.
"We've had hints of her and Ali's mum not being there for them very much and being a bit of a drinker. And we know their dad wasn't around very much. So it'd be interesting to see that side of things."
Rachel's one-night stand with Jai (Chris Bisson) still remains one of the village's best-kept secrets, as the businessman has managed to hide his infidelity from almost everyone - including his ruthless wife Charity.
Oaten commented: "Rachel does want Jai to tell Charity - she doesn't care if Charity wants to kill her, she's not going to live a lie. But as you've seen so far, it doesn't quite pan out like that."
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1.
