The actor, who plays boozy Shadrach Dingle, said young fans press coins into his hands to pass on to his on-screen family.
He told Teletext: "I get recognised an awful lot by fans. Little kids come up to me and give me 20p for the Dingle family - they think the Dingles are poor."
However, he said he refuses to share any hand-outs with the rest of the cast, joking: "Certainly not! I keep the money!"
