Emmerdale's Ashley and Laurel are devastated when they discover that baby Daniel could not have been their child.
The emotional storyline reaches its climax in a fortnight when their doctor explains to Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) that she was not Daniel's biological mother and that her baby was switched at birth. Both she and husband Ashley (John Middleton) are distraught at the revelation.
Speaking of the storyline, Charlotte Bellamy said: "When Laurel is told that she can’t be Daniel’s mother, she is in complete disbelief. She will not accept the news at all."
Emmerdale's baby swap storyline has already been compared to that of Coronation Street, which has seen barmaid Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh) forced to deal with the news that Ryan (Ben Thompson) is not her real son and that he was swapped at birth with her biological son, Alex Neeson (Dario Coates).
Defending the similar plot, an ITV spokeswoman told DS: "The storyline regarding Laurel and Ashley's baby has been planned for over a year and whilst discussions do take place concerning similar storylines on Emmerdale and Coronation Street, it is important that they do not compromise the integrity of either show."
She added: "We view these storylines very differently and they certainly take very different directions."
Emmerdale's baby swap revelation airs on Wednesday, April 16 at 7pm on ITV1.
