Ricky Whittle (Calvin Valentine, 'Hollyoaks')

Ricky Whittle (Calvin Valentine, 'Hollyoaks')
Hollyoaks' Calvin Valentine finds himself in a sticky situation next week when he accidentally kills his sister's drug supplier Nige (Sam Townend) in self-defence. With the village's resident bad boy Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) blackmailing him, Calvin has no choice but to go along with his requests, with disastrous consequences. Here, Ricky Whittle chats to DS about his character's upcoming incident, his screen nuptials and a potential stint on Strictly Come Dancing.

Do you think buying Sasha the drugs was out of character for Calvin? Why did he do it?
"He was at his lowest ebb. Everyone forgets that he's only 22 and he's had to look after his family. He's still just a kid himself and everything piles up on him. He just doesn't know what to do any more. Sasha was on the drugs and then she came off them. Calvin was making an extra effort with her and there was no reason for her to go back to them. He didn't understand why she went back to the drugs after all his efforts. When he caught her 'self-harming' - or what Calvin thought was self-harming - he didn't want her to go through the ordeal, so he went to get her drugs."

Why's Calvin receiving threatening texts from Warren?
"Because it's soap, it was very convenient that when Calvin confiscates drugs from Nige, Sasha's dealer, it's right in view of Warren's CCTV camera's at The Loft. Warren does mention in the script that he's only just had them installed, though. Warren then starts blackmailing Calvin from there, really. He gets him to do little things for him from then on."

There's a showdown at The Loft between Calvin, Warren and Nige, isn't there?
"To try and kill two birds with one stone, Warren arranges to meet Nige who owes him some money. Warren arranges to meet him at The Loft and guilts Calvin into being there. Nige reacts badly to Calvin being there and pulls out a knife, while goading Calvin about supplying his sister with drugs and sleeping with her. Calvin thumps Nige and turns his back on him, but when Nige gets up off the floor, he stabs Calvin in the arm. Calvin grabs the closest thing to him which is a champagne bucket and lashes it across Nige's temples, sending him crashing to the floor… When Warren checks Nige's pulse, he says he's not breathing and Calvin immediately switches into regret mode, but Warren tells him to get to hospital and he'll deal with the rest."

Was the incident caught on the CCTV tape, then?
"Now you're a bit too clever for your own good! There's CCTV footage inside the club, too, but that's all going to come out down the line. Good spot, though, I'm impressed. Warren's got Calvin by the short and curlies. Calvin immediately wants to confess, but Warren convinces him not to."

Does this set Calvin in self-destruct mode?
"Not really self-destruct... Calvin and Warren have always been these stags who have locked horns – good versus evil, battling for the two years we've been on the show together. Warren's going to start corrupting Calvin a little bit. Calvin's been on the moral side for two years and it's not really done anything for him. He's lost the girl, the baby, friends and family. Whereas Warren's been wheeling and dealing and he's got the girl, the club, the money, the car… Let's just say Warren leads Calvin astray a little and they're going to become allies."

I hear you're filming Calvin and Carmel's wedding at the moment. I'm presuming it's not going to go smoothly?
"It never does - it's soap! Something always happens. Carmel's brings a lot of comedy to the wedding, along with the McQueens."

And Pamela Anderson - have you heard from here since your stint on the Sunday Night Project? Did you get her number?
"No, no, no, I couldn't! I've got a beautiful young lady at home, but she's now on my laminate. She wasn't on my laminate before, but now she's back on, when I see her again, we're swapping digits!"

I've heard you're being lined up for Strictly Come Dancing?
"I've just spoken to producers. There's a lot of people on the list wanting to do it, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed." Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
