Stephanie Waring (Cindy Cunningham, 'Hollyoaks Later')

By
Stephanie Waring (Cindy Cunningham, 'Hollyoaks Later')
Cindy and Tony's wedding has to be put on hold during tonight's episode of Hollyoaks Later as Darren's plan to drive a wedge between the husband and wife-to-be hit new heights when he parcelled the groom off to the middle of nowhere in the back of a potato truck. Cindy - played by Stepheanie Waring - is fuming by Darren's (Ashley Taylor Dawson) interference and realising that she truly loves Tony, demands that Darren and Savannah (Nicola Stapleton) help in tracking Tony (Nick Pickard) down. We recently caught up with Stephanie to chat about her Later nuptials, Tony versus Darren and Cindy's scam.

How did you get involved in Hollyoaks Later this year?
"I was asked by Bryan Kirkwood if I was available or wanted to do it and I jumped at the chance. I wasn't involved involved in last year's Hollyoaks Later and it was a really good series. I was really pleased to be asked."

What's it been like working with Bryan again?
"I absolutely love Bryan. I love his vision and the fact he was on set every day working with us and seeing how hard we work as actors and seeing it develop for himself was really great. Just listening to his ideas and how he wants the storyline to work - it's been great. You get to know your producer better when you're working so closely with them rather than just having this voice in the office upstairs. He did wonders with the main show and you just adhere to [what he says] because you know he's right at the end of the day!"

What's been the feel of the Later episodes this year?
"From my point of view we see a real person finally in Cindy - we see who she really is and how she really feels which has always been a mask for her in the normal Hollyoaks. She's always been really gobby and says what she thinks. She uses her outer image to hide who she really is inside and in Later we discover she's just a normal girl who wants to find love and security and have a secure life with her daughter and have a family - she's found that in Tony."

Your story strand's called 'Gold Digger' - do you think Cindy is just that?
"I think she's definitely out for what she can get - she's always going to be up to something! We're going to have to see what happens with this but I don't think she'll change who she's become over the last eight years in Spain. It's important that we see she's not this one-dimensional gold-digging tart, though. There were some episodes in normal Hollyoaks where we saw this a little bit when she thought Tony was just with her for her looks and Holly didn't want to be like her. In Later this spills out again and we get to see more of the Cindy there once was before moving to Spain."

Do you think she loves Tony and Darren in different ways?
"Cindy and Darren are one and the same - they're the same person with different body parts! They're made for each other but they're destructive when they're together. They bring out the worst in each other whereas Cindy and Tony bring out the best in each other. If she's with Darren he could be the love of her life but I think she's trying to be more sensible and say, 'This is the road I need to go down for my daughter's sake'."

Tony goes AWOL during the week, doesn't he?
"I can't wait to see this - it's going to be so hilarious! Darren puts him on a truck or something and he gets dropped in the middle of nowhere with no clothes on. He's been plied with drink the night before by Darren who's trying to get Tony out of the picture because Darren's in love with Cindy and wants to marry Cindy instead. Cindy thinks he's off his head. Anyway, Darren puts Tony on this truck after having set him up the night before with a woman called Sadie - so Tony's slept with this other woman and there's all this emotional baggage in Tony's head. This is how the truth comes out about the scam. When Cindy and Darren and Savannah finally do find Tony, he tells Cindy what he's done. He's been a good man telling the truth and Cindy takes that as her opportunity to tell him the truth. All the cards are on the table."

Does the truth about Cindy's potential scam come out?
"Everything comes out and she tells Darren she doesn't want anything more to do with him and the scam's off and turns to Tony and says, 'Look, this is the deal, this is what we did, but this is who I really am, take me or leave me'. And it's up to Tony whether he believes her or not. You can see from Cindy and her emotions that this is the first time we're seeing the real her."

What was the funniest moment filming?
"There's been so many good times, though. The best so far is at the end of the last episode but I can't tell you! I think also working with Nicola, we've become very close and had a lot of fun. Actually, the standout moment and the most fun I've had on this shoot is when me and Nicola Stapleton had to do our flashback scenes for when we were in Spain and we had no extras so the boys on the crew got involved to be our men - screaming, 'Get your kit off!' at them, spraying tequila on them, dancing on the bar to 'Independent Women' by Destiny's Child. It was so much fun!"

Maybe they could film a spinoff DVD of what Cindy got up to in Spain?
"That'd be so cool to do a spinoff of Cindy's time in Spain - you should pitch that!"

Hollyoaks Later continues tonight at 9pm on E4.
